EXCRUCIATING PAIN In PragNancy
A Must Read'
Your Mother carried you inside of her womb for nine whole months, she felt sick for months with nausea, then she watched her feet swell and her skin stretch and tear. She struggled to climb stairs, she got breathless quickly and even a simple task like putting her shoes on was a huge struggle for her. She suffered many sleepless nights while you kicked and squirmed inside of her and while you demanded that she scoffed junk at 3am, she then went through EXCRUCIATING PAIN to bring you into this world. She became your nurse, your chef, your maid, your chauffeur, your biggest fan, your teacher, your agony aunt and your best friend. She's struggled for you, cried over you, fought for you, put herself second for you, hoped the best for you and has driven herself insane with worry for you but never has she asked for anything in return because she loves you and did it all on love alone! Most of us take our Mums for granted but there are people who have lost or have never even seen theirs. If you have a loving Mother who did all of this for you, you are very lucky, never devalue her worth because one day, you'll wish you hadn't!

14 Reasons to Quit Smoking
14 Reasons to Quit Smoking
Quit Smoking: Why and How?
World No Tobacco day is observed around the world on the 31st of May. It is a day meant to draw attention to the harmful effects of tobacco and encourage people to refrain from using it in all forms. If you smoke, this day is an opportunity to think what your habit is doing to your life. If you have tried to quit smoking in the past, it is an opportunity to try yet again. There is compelling evidence to prove that several years of your life get blown up with cigarette smoke and the risk of debilitating diseases looms over the years that remain. But there is hope because evidence also shows that it is certainly possible to quit smoking and quitting reverses a lot of the damage.
Reasons for Quitting Smoking
1. Health Reasons
Heart Disease and Stroke: Smoking is a bigger risk factor for heart disease than high cholesterol, high blood pressure or obesity. Worse still, no amount of exercise or good diet can offset the harmful effect of smoking on your heart. Smoking even 1 to 4 cigarettes a day increases your risk of coronary artery disease. A smoker is 2 to 3 times more likely to die of a heart attack or stroke than a non-smoker. Smoking increases your heart disease and stroke risk by:
The damage to the tubes and tissue of lungs also leads to a lung disease called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It increases the frequency and severity of asthma attacks in people prone to asthma. Flu, colds, pneumonia occur much more commonly in people who smoke.
3. Other Cancers: the carcinogen (cancer causing substances) in smoke not only affect your lung but can also lead to cancers of the voice box (larynx), mouth, throat, esophagus, intestines, bladder, kidney, and pancreas.
4. Impotence: Smoking narrows and damages blood vessels throughout the body including those supplying the penis leading to erection problems in men.
5. Gum disease: Smoking puts you at a much higher risk of infections of the gums that can lead to tooth loss.
6. Premature ageing of skin: Cigarette smoke damages collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep skin smooth and supple. The result is wrinkles that make you look much older than your years.
7. Alzheimer's disease: People who smoke are at an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease at an early age. Elderly who smoke have a faster rate of mental decline compared to their peers who do not smoke.
8. Health Risks to Your Family: Passive smoking to an extent carries all the hazards of smoking. In addition, children of parents who smoke have a higher rate of sore throats, coughs, colds, and ear infections. Babies of mothers who smoke are at an increased risk of a sudden infant death syndrome (SID). Evidence also suggests that tobacco smoke makes babies more prone to colic.
9. Blindness: Smokers are at an increased risk of age-related macular degeneration, a severe and progressive eye disease that leads to loss of vision.
10. Rheumatoid Arthritis: If you have a genetic tendency to develop rheumatoid arthritis, smoking will further increase your risk manifold.
11. Snoring: Studies show that people who smoke tend to snore much more than those who do not, which could be associated with a poorer quality of sleep. Even people exposed to second hand smoke snore more than those who are not.
12. Acid Reflux: Smoking puts you at risk of developing gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), which manifests as heartburn.
13. Breast Cancer: Studies also indicate that women who smoke maybe at an increased risk of breast cancer. Women who start smoking before 20 years of age or those who smoke more than 20 cigarettes in a day are at a greater risk.
14. The Other Reasons that Matter
Better health is undoubtedly an overwhelming benefit of quitting smoking. But there are yet more ways in which quitting smoking will change your life for the better. Take a look.

World Cancer Day : Cancer Prevention, What Can you Do?
World Cancer Day : Cancer Prevention, What Can you Do?
Today 04 February is World Cancer Day.
Cancer Prevention: What Can you Do?Partly because of the dramatic portrayal of cancer in the movies of yesteryears, and partly because of plain lack of information, cancer is commonly viewed as a health calamity, an “Act of God” that can strike anyone at anytime. The problem with this perception is that we do not give serious thought to cancer prevention because we do not see how our lifestyle choices and level of awareness may impact our risk. Scientific research has been able to identify cancer risk factors that are within our control. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 40% of all cancer cases are in fact preventable. More importantly, early detection is possible in a large number of cases which greatly increases the chances of successful treatment. Here is an overview of the most common cancers and what you can do to reduce your risk or ensure early detection.
The burden of Cancer
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in developed countries after cardiovascular diseases. But in no way should it be thought of as a disease of the affluent. It ranks among the top three causes of death in low and middle income countries. In 2004, 7.4 million people died of cancer. In spite of medical advances, cancer is on the rise and cancer deaths may rise to more than 11 million in 2030. Lung cancer is the single largest killer among all cancers and a large part of it occurs because of tobacco use.
Is Cancer Preventable?
Cancer prevention is possible because the occurrence of most common cancers has been linked to risk factors that are within our control. More than 90% of oral cancer cases that occur are directly linked to tobacco use, something that can certainly be avoided. In fact, tobacco use is the single largest preventable cause of cancer in the world. There is also definitive evidence of an association between obesity and some cancers, such as those of breast in postmenopausal women, and cancer of the uterus and colon. Excessive alcohol use and potentially preventable infections such as Hepatitis B and HPV can cause cancer. By making the right lifestyle choices, you can certainly decrease your risk of falling prey to cancer. The best part is that these same lifestyle measures also offer protection against cardiovascular diseases and should thus be looked upon as the keys to healthy and long life.
Steps you can take to prevent Cancer
- Quit tobacco in all forms, smoking as well as smokeless (pan, gutkha etc.).
- Have alcohol in moderation. Not more than 2 drinks a day for men or 1 for women.
- Adopt a physically active lifestyle. At least 30 minutes of exercise five days a week.
- Consume a healthy diet with limited red meat and saturated fat and more fiber
- Get vaccinated against hepatitis B.
- Protect yourself from HPV infection through safe sexual practices. Women may consider vaccination.
- Though skin cancer is rare, sunscreen is advised to protect skin from UV radiation.
- Avoid risk of occupational exposure to chemicals and radiation through taking necessary precautions.

Gifting on Valentine is common and common gifts include flowers, apparels, jewels and in some cases, costlier stuff.
On 14 February 2014, a wife witnessed a strange gift where, her husband “gifted” one of his kidneys to his wife. The 62-year old Richard Mach gave one of his kidneys to his ailing wife Joy Mach, who was experiencing kidney problems due to Crohn’s disease. This gift saved her from years of painful dialysis. Isn’t is wonderful to get a gift like this from your loved ones? Let’s take a closer look at kidney transplant.

What is a Kidney Transplant?
Kidneys are vital cogs of our urinary system. They are the natural filters of blood and help in removal of wastes. However, if kidneys fail to work, the only treatment option available maybe dialysis or transplant. Kidney transplantation is a procedure that places a healthy kidney in one’s body. Kidney transplantation or dialysis is opted for when one’s kidney function typically drops below 20% (insufficient renal function).Risks of Kidney Transplant
- Rejection of the new kidney (Transplant Rejection) – Happens when the receptor’s immune system mis-detects the new kidney as a foreign object.
- Infection
- Failure of the donor kidney – This arises when the donor kidney fails to function within the new person.
- Blood clots in the arteries
